Cathy Coughlan presents
CONTEMPORARY ARTS PRACTICE AND SCREEN BASED TECHNOLOGY
Friday 6th November
Dancer and visual artist Cathy Coughlan presented a morning of dance film, performance and documentary as part of the REWIND Film Festival at RuaRed. The day also saw the launch of HAVOC; a remote company (web-based initiative) established through Cathy’s research into screen based technology and collaborative dance practice. Cathy’s research has been supported by Create’s Artist in the Community Bursary Award, with continued support from the Arts Council, through the Dance Artist in Residence Award.
In his welcome address, Paul Johnson CEO Dance Ireland reminded us of the theme running through Cathy’s work Collaboration + Partnerships. Paul stressed the importance to pause at this moment in time and take stock of the interesting and provocative propositions Cathy puts forward; with reference to the work as a whole ,particularly to the title of her documentary series SHIFT. He said that ‘today is the beginning of another artistic journey’ that he hoped would would stimulate and challenge our conversations. Paul welcomed Orla Scanlon of Arts Office, Katherine Atkinson from Create and fellow collaborators Michelle Cahill and Ailish Claffey and thanked representatives from RuaRed for the ongoing support.
Katherine Atkinson of Create gave us the background of how they, as an organisation have managed the Artist in Community Schemes on behalf of the Arts Council. Established to support artists in research and development, the bursary came about in recognition for artists to engage in reflective practice. Katherine praised Cathy and congratulated her for the large body of work she has undertaken under this scheme.
We were then presented with the dance film OUT SIDE IN and a digital duet NON VERBAL (See below for more details). Then Cathy introduced us to HAVOC explaining to us that through her research and the interview processes she undertook the idea for HAVOC emerged. It is an ever expanding piece of research and reflection. The project is managed through a co-operative of dance artists including myself and Ailish Claffey. Cathy launched the website highlighting particular areas of interest. We watched interviews from the SHIFT series and Cathy and Katherine led a discussion after each one.
